The Swimming Sensor

Project type

Electronics

Having been a swimmer for 13 years of my own life, and Head Coach of The Breton Bay Sea Devils for two years, I created the Swimming Sensor to assist young swimmers in the backstroke. As a coach, many of my younger beginner-level swimmers would refrain from a strong finish to the wall on backstroke due to the fear of hitting one's head (I can attest, this can hurt!). Volunteer coaches may opt to kneel and actively stop a swimmer from colliding, but this method easily becomes inconsistent and inconvenient as they are needed elsewhere! This proof-of-concept design simply alerts the swimmer when they are near the wall with a loud beep. All electronics contained within waterproof casing, with an on/off button exposed for ease of use. The Swimming Sensor's main usage applies to practices (when race flags are not up, which is typically how beginner swimmers acquire their stroke count for races), and the concept could be adapted to operate during competitions (complete redesign currently underway, standby!)
